This module was designed to establish key ideas and themes fundamental to the course. We were introduced to the basic principles of design, including composition, typography, colour theory, and visual hierarchy, and how these elements come together to create effective visual communication. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on exercises, and project-based learning, we explored the essential visual language used in design. These activities provided a deeper understanding of how to communicate ideas and information effectively while encouraging us to think critically about design choices. Additionally, we developed the ability to generate and refine creative concepts through visual exploration, experimentation, and iterative design processes.

As the module progressed, we were given the challenge of creating a visual interpretation of the dance piece Autobiography by renowned choreographer Wayne McGregor—the project aimed to promote Sadler’s Wells, a prestigious dance theatre known for its contemporary performances. The final outcome took the form of a concertina-fold publication, visually representing the human body in motion. By studying McGregor’s choreography, we sought to capture the fluidity, precision, and expressiveness of dance through dynamic compositions, movement-inspired imagery, and carefully considered typography. This project not only enhanced our ability to translate movement into design but also deepened our appreciation for the intersection of visual communication and performing arts.
