Type Builds Character - Editorial Design (2022)
A typographic research project exploring how typeface, spacing, and layout systems influence readability and visual hierarchy.
Tools: Adobe InDesign, Photoshop
Role:Editorial Design, Visual Systems
Duration: 2.5 months
Project Summary
This project focused on the development of a typographic study and reference book documenting a series of experiments with continuous text formatting. The aim was to investigate how different typographic variables influence readability, hierarchy, and visual rhythm in long-form text.
Through structured experimentation, the project explored how design decisions such as typeface selection, spacing, alignment, and layout systems affect the clarity and effectiveness of written communication.
The Challenge
The main challenge of this project was understanding how small typographic adjustments can significantly impact the readability and structure of text-heavy layouts.
-
Managing large amounts of continuous text without losing readability
-
Developing a consistent typographic hierarchy
-
Balancing visual structure with functional legibility
-
Documenting typographic experiments in a systematic way
The ultimate goal was to create a reference publication that clearly demonstrates how typographic choices influence the reading experience
Research
The research phase focused on studying typographic principles related to readability and text composition.
Key areas explored included:
-
Macro-typography (overall layout and structure)
-
Micro-typography (character-level adjustments)
-
Grid systems and column structures
-
Line spacing, kerning, and tracking
-
The impact of typeface selection on tone and legibility
As part of the experimentation process, I tested different typefaces, including Arial and Roboto, both known for their clarity and versatility in editorial and digital environments.

Design Approach
Each page included captions identifying key typographic variables such as:
-
Typeface
-
Type size
-
Type Style
-
Text Formating
This systematic approach allowed the publication to function as both a design outcome and a reference guide for understanding typographic composition.
Outcome
The final outcome is a typographic study and reference book that documents a range of typographic experiments and demonstrates how layout structure and micro-adjustments influence readability.
The project highlights the importance of precision in typographic design and showcases how subtle changes in spacing, hierarchy, and alignment can significantly affect the reading experience.
Reflection
This project strengthened my understanding of typography as a structured design system rather than purely a visual element.
Through this exploration, I developed a deeper appreciation for the role of typographic precision in communication and gained practical experience in designing layouts that prioritise clarity, hierarchy, and readability.
