Baseline Magazine - Editorial Design (2021)
An editorial design project exploring typography as a tool for visual communication through the design of a magazine inspired by Baseline.
Tools: Adobe InDesign, Photoshop
Role: Editorial Designer
Duration: 6 weeks
Project Summary
This project was developed as part of the Typography & Communication module, which focused on understanding the artistic and functional role of typography in design. The objective was to design a magazine inspired by Baseline, a publication dedicated to typography and visual communication.
For this project, I created an editorial publication exploring the Chinese language and its visual structure. The magazine highlights the history, cultural significance, and visual complexity of Chinese characters, presenting them through structured editorial layouts and typographic hierarchy.
The Challenge
The main challenge of this project was communicating complex typographic and cultural information in a way that remained visually engaging and easy to understand.
-
Presenting historical and cultural information clearly
-
Balancing expressive Chinese characters with readable editorial layouts
-
Creating a strong typographic hierarchy to guide readers through the content
-
Designing layouts that emphasise typography as the primary visual elements

Research
The research phase explored the development and cultural significance of Chinese writing systems. This included studying the structure and evolution of Chinese characters, their calligraphic traditions, and their use in modern design.
Key areas explored included:
-
Typographic hierarchy
-
Grid systems
-
Visual rhythm in a magazine layout
Understanding these principles helped inform the layout and structure of the magazine.

Design Approach
The design approach focused on using typography as the central visual element of the publication
-
Developing a structured grid system to organise editorial content
-
Creating a clear typographic hierarchy to improve readability
-
Incorporating large-scale Chinese characters as visual focal points
-
Using white space to balance dense visual elements
These decisions allowed the magazine to highlight the expressive nature of Chinese characters while maintaining clarity and structure.
Outcome
The final outcome is a typographic editorial publication that explores the relationship between language, culture, and visual communication.
Through structured layouts and expressive typography, the magazine presents Chinese characters as both a functional writing system and a powerful visual design element.
Reflection
This project strengthened my understanding of typography as a communication system and helped develop my skills in editorial layout design and visual hierarchy.
Through the process, I gained experience in translating research into structured visual content and designing layouts that balance expression with readability.
If developed further, I would explore how the publication could be adapted for digital platforms to enhance accessibility and interactive engagement.
