Brushstrokes Through Time

An editorial design project exploring the historical evolution of Chinese calligraphy and translating complex cultural research into a structured, contemporary publication.

Tools: Adobe InDesign, Photoshop

Role: Research, Editorial Design, Visual Systems

Duration: 2.5 months

Project Summary

Exploring the Evolution of Chinese Calligraphy is a research-driven editorial design project investigating the historical development of Chinese calligraphic styles and their influence on contemporary visual communication

The outcome is a typographic-led publication that bridges tradition and modern layout systems.

The Challenge

Research

  • Present thousands of years of history in a clear and digestible way

  • Maintain cultural authenticity while using contemporary design systems

  • Balance expressive calligraphic visuals with strong typographic hierarchy

  • Prevent visual overload while showcasing intricate detail

I conducted in-depth research into the evolution of Chinese calligraphy, tracing its origins from oracle bone script and bronze inscriptions to modern interpretations.

Key areas explored included:

  • Major script styles (Seal, Clerical, Regular, Cursive)

  • Structural differences in stroke composition

  • Cultural and philosophical influences

  • Contemporary reinterpretations in branding and digital media

The goal was to understand not only the aesthetic qualities, but the system and logic behind each script style.

Design Approach

To translate complex historical content into a readable format, I developed:

  • A modular grid system to organise content chronologically

  • Clear typographic hierarchy to separate analysis, history, and imagery

  • Controlled white space to allow intricate calligraphic forms to breathe

  • Visual comparisons to support reader understanding

The editorial structure was designed to guide readers through a narrative journey, from historical origins to contemporary applications.

Outcome

The final outcome is a typographic-led publication that bridges tradition and contemporary editorial design. The project demonstrates how historical research can be transformed into a structured communication system that balances expression with clarity.

Reflection

Through this project, I strengthened my understanding of:

  • Typographic systems

  • Information hierarchy

  • Cultural sensitivity in design

  • Structuring complex content for accessibility

If developed further for digital platforms, I would explore interactive storytelling and accessibility considerations to enhance engagement and readability.
